Exciting Opportunities in STEM for Young Students

LIMA, Ohio — As students progress through their educational journeys, many begin to envision the careers they aspire to pursue. For those interested in the ever-evolving field of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the Rhodesology camp is making significant strides in connecting young minds with industry professionals through its pre-college summer programs. Aimed at 8th graders through juniors in high school, this initiative offers an invaluable opportunity to explore local STEM career prospects.

Exploring Artificial Intelligence

During the camp, one of the most captivating subjects introduced to students was artificial intelligence (AI). The program featured insights from Dr. David Haus, Dean of Technology at Rhodes State College, who provided students with an in-depth look at the AI curriculum. Dr. Haus emphasized the importance of early exposure to AI, as its applications are becoming increasingly integral across various industries.

He explained that students would engage with specific courses focused on generative AI, AI in manufacturing, and AI applications in healthcare. Dr. Haus reiterated the need for students to understand foundational AI concepts—such as machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. "Knowing those fundamentals is important," he said, "but also being able to create AI models and solutions for companies instead of relying on off-the-shelf products."

Hands-On Learning Experience

In a hands-on environment, students had the chance to work on projects utilizing different AI models. A key takeaway from this experience was that AI should be viewed as a tool to be handled thoughtfully to combat misinformation. Feedback from participants highlighted this critical perspective.

Taylor Wall-Fergerson, a 9th grader, shared that "the AI field is rapidly changing and developing" and that she wanted to learn more about it. She underscored the importance of fact-checking when dealing with AI-generated content, illustrating the need for accuracy and responsibility in this new tech-driven landscape.

Ethical Considerations

Dr. Haus also addressed the ethical implications surrounding AI usage. He cautioned that, while AI is a powerful tool, it must be utilized responsibly. “Just because we can do something doesn’t mean we should,” he remarked, stressing the importance of critical thinking and ethics introduced in conjunction with technical skills.

This thoughtful approach aims to cultivate not only technical proficiency among students but also a sense of responsibility and ethical awareness. As Dr. Haus stated, "AI is not necessarily a scary thing; it’s a tool like any other, but it needs responsible use."

Diverse Learning Paths Offered

The Rhodesology camp doesn’t just stop at AI. Other pre-college sessions included diverse fields such as surgical technology, industrial automation, and food production and manufacturing. Each program is designed to provide students with comprehensive insights into various career tracks within the STEM sphere, thereby allowing them to make informed decisions about their futures.

By exposing participants to hands-on experiences and interactions with professionals in various fields, Rhodesology is setting the stage for the next generation of innovators and leaders in STEM. This intentional effort to bridge gaps between education and industry paves the way for students to excel in their chosen paths and sparks interest in fields that continue to shape our world.
