Lee describes his initial journey as fairly traditional, explaining, “I was always broadly interested in technology and startups, but I never really thought I’d be an entrepreneur. I assumed I was set to become a lawyer; most of my family members are lawyers, and practicing law felt like a natural path.” However, Harvard Law’s curriculum challenged his expectations and prompted him to explore alternative career possibilities.

Encountering an Astonishing Problem

The pivotal moment came during his trademark class, where he learned that counterfeiting is not just a problem—it’s the world’s largest criminal enterprise. Lee noted, “I saw it as a universal problem—and one that could be solved with the technology I was passionate about at the time: computer vision.” He recognized a growing demand for solutions in this space, particularly as the global market for counterfeit goods began to swell during the COVID-19 pandemic, fueled by online marketplaces and social media.

Birth of MarqVision

This insight laid the groundwork for MarqVision, the company Lee co-founded in 2021. The name itself symbolizes its mission: “Marq” from trademark, and “Vision” from computer vision. Together, they aimed to leverage artificial intelligence to combat counterfeiting and trademark infringement worldwide.

Rapid Growth and Strategic Expansion

By 2025, MarqVision had successfully closed a $48 million Series B funding round, bringing its total capital raised to about $90 million. Roughly half of this new capital aims to expand its AI and engineering teams, enhancing the company’s capabilities in automation and generative AI integration. With plans to scale upmarket and target larger brands, MarqVision also earmarked $10 million to make its platform enterprise-ready, while entering lucrative markets like Japan.

A Shift in Market Dynamics

Investors increasingly seek technology companies that use AI not just for productivity but to radically transform service delivery. Lee emphasizes, “AI is expanding the total addressable market for software from efficiency tools into the execution of the work itself—unlocking a market opportunity of over $10 trillion.” With few early-stage companies reaching substantial growth in the AI space, MarqVision stands out with its innovative approach.

A Diverse Clientele

MarqVision now serves over 350 customers from various sectors, including fashion, gaming, entertainment, and pharmaceuticals. The startup achieved rapid financial milestones, reaching $1 million in annual recurring revenue within eight months, and surpassing $20 million in just four years. Lee has ambitious goals, stating, “Our goal is $100 million ARR by mid-2027,” emphasizing a focus on customer satisfaction and building a scalable AI-driven foundation.

Redefining Service Categories

The perception of “services” in technology is undergoing a significant transformation due to AI, which offers software-like scalability and efficiency. This shift has attracted considerable investment interest, with firms like Peak XV, HSG, and Salesforce Ventures supporting MarqVision’s forward-thinking vision. The emergence of large language models has positioned MarqVision as a leader in the burgeoning AI-led services sector, sparking competition and further growth opportunities.

From Fighting Counterfeits to Revenue Recovery

Initially, MarqVision focused on combating counterfeit products online. However, the startup has since pivoted to assist brands in recovering lost revenue. According to Lee, many clients report a significant sales boost, making the platform indispensable not just for legal departments but also for teams tracking revenue impacts.

Envisioning a Greater Future

When he first pitched MarqVision, Lee aimed for it to be a $5 billion software company, catering to 10,000 IP teams globally. Yet, with guidance from his mentors, he broadened his vision to encompass a massive end-to-end managed services market opportunity, now believed to be 100 times larger than his original goal.

Advanced Brand Protection

MarqVision is redefining brand protection. It not only detects and removes counterfeit goods but also enables companies to manage their digital presence comprehensively. Looking to the future, the company plans to introduce brand intelligence services that will provide insights into supply chains and pricing strategies.
