Dive into the World of AI at Southeastern Oklahoma State University’s IT Camp

What to Expect

On Tuesday, August 5, 2025, students, educators, and tech enthusiasts alike are invited to participate in the annual IT Camp hosted by Southeastern Oklahoma State University. This year’s highlight is an engaging workshop titled “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Beginners,” spearheaded by the knowledgeable Dr. Ming-Shan Su. This workshop promises an exciting and informative experience tailored for anyone aged 10 and older.

Event Logistics

The workshop kicks off promptly at 5:30 p.m. in room 104 of the Classroom Building, located at 1427 North 7th Avenue. One of the best aspects of this event is that admission is completely free! There is no need for prior registration or experience, making it accessible to everyone interested in learning about the fascinating realms of AI and machine learning. As a bonus, the first 30 participants will receive a USB drive containing face-swapping software—what a fun way to dive deeper into the technology!

Workshop Overview

Dr. Ming-Shan Su, the Pam Fahrendorf Endowed Professor in Computer Science and Technology at Southeastern, will be leading this workshop alongside Rahul Iyengar from Arizona State University. Both experts are ready to demystify complex topics and make them accessible to beginners.

Key Topics Covered

The workshop will cover a variety of essential topics, including:

  • Why Bother with AI/ML?
This section will explore the significance of artificial intelligence and machine learning in today’s world. Participants will gain insight into how these technologies are revolutionizing various industries, from healthcare to finance.

  • Understanding AI and ML
Here, Dr. Su and Iyengar will break down the foundational concepts of AI and machine learning, ensuring participants grasp the basics before diving deeper.

  • How AI and ML Work
Participants will learn about the inner workings of AI algorithms, data processing, and the critical role of machine learning in creating intelligent systems.

  • Hands-On Activity
No workshop is complete without some practical exposure. Attendees will engage in a hands-on activity designed to illustrate key concepts in action, providing a memorable learning experience.

  • Ethical Considerations
As AI technology advances, ethical considerations become paramount. This segment will discuss the potential implications of AI on society, including biases in algorithms and the responsibilities of those who develop these technologies.

  • The Future of AI
Finally, participants can look forward to a discussion about the future trajectory of AI and machine learning, reflecting on current trends and predicting what lies ahead.

  • Q&A Session
To round out the workshop, there will be a dedicated question-and-answer session where participants can seek clarifications or explore topics of personal interest, creating an interactive dialogue between experts and learners.
