In 2024, the Japanese automotive industry added approximately 13,000 industrial robots to its operations, marking an impressive 11% increase over the previous year. This surge represents the highest level of robotic installations since 2020. As the world’s leader in robot manufacturing, Japan accounts for about 38% of global robot production.

Takayuki Ito, president of the Frankfurt-based International Federation of Robotics (IFR), shared insightful observations on this phenomenon. In terms of factory automation, Japan ranks fourth globally, with a robot density of 1,531 robots per 10,000 employees in 2023. This positions Japan ahead of the United States and Germany, trailing only Slovenia, South Korea, and Switzerland.

Adapting to New Technologies

The Japanese automotive industry is currently navigating a significant restructuring phase to accommodate alternative powertrains. According to IFR reports, numerous car manufacturers are expanding their offerings to include battery and fuel cell electric vehicles. Notably, they are also innovating hydrogen-fueled combustion engines. This strategic diversification necessitates advanced production technologies tailored to these emerging automotive solutions.

Car manufacturers represent a substantial portion—around 25%—of all robot installations annually in Japan. In 2024 alone, the electrical and electronics sector slightly topped this figure, with installations reaching about 14,000 industrial robots. This development reflects a 5% decrease but underscores the vast demand for automation technologies across multiple industries.

Meanwhile, the U.S. automotive industry is also experiencing an uptick in automation. With an increase of 10.7%, the total installations of industrial robots reached approximately 13,700 units in 2024. However, it’s worth noting that many of these machines are sourced from international manufacturers, indicating a global supply chain dynamic.

China’s Dominance in the Robotics Market

In Asia, China is swiftly rising to prominence in the robotics arena, propelled by its national robotics strategy. Between 2021 and 2023, the country saw installations of around 280,000 industrial robots annually. Over the past decade, its share of global industrial robot installations has dramatically increased from about 20% to over 50%. This explosive growth underlines China’s commitment to automation and its transformative impacts on manufacturing processes.

With a robot density of 470 robots per 10,000 employees in manufacturing, China ranks third globally, surpassing both Germany and Japan. This surge indicates a fundamental shift in how nations are embracing automation technologies across sectors, prompting a reevaluation of traditional manufacturing paradigms.
