At the forefront of this conversation is UT Austin, where Julie Schell, the assistant vice provost of academic technology, has been instrumental in shaping guidelines around generative AI’s use in education. The university has introduced a framework known as “AI Forward, AI Responsible,” emphasizing a balanced approach. This framework encourages students and faculty to embrace AI as a learning tool, while also being mindful of its limitations.

Schell highlights the need for educational institutions to educate both students and faculty on these limitations. Early on, UT Austin identified what they call the “big six” limitations of using generative AI in learning. This innovative tool is designed to address the limitations associated with AI while promoting a deeper engagement with learning materials. UTSage encourages critical thinking and problem-solving rather than simply providing instant answers, thus enriching the educational experience.

Implementing AI in the Classroom

As part of her teaching role, Schell is keen on integrating AI within her classroom in a structured way. She scaffolds the use of AI across three projects, allowing students to gradually familiarize themselves with its capabilities. The first project gives students the option to use AI; in the second, they are encouraged to actively incorporate it; and by the third, AI usage becomes a requirement.

This gradual approach not only helps students develop their "ethical muscle," as Schell puts it, but also prepares them for the complexities of responsible AI use. By guiding them through each stage of adoption, instructors can effectively enhance students’ understanding and application of AI technologies.
