H&M and Ikea Collaborate with Swedish Robotics Firm for Warehouse Automation

Share

Rebl Industries, a Swedish robotics company, has recently made headlines with its groundbreaking collaborations with two of the world’s leading retail giants: Ikea and H&M. The partnerships aim to introduce innovative warehouse robotics into the operations of both companies.

At the core of Rebl’s business model is a unique ‘robots-as-a-service’ approach. This structure allows organizations to utilize the sophisticated technology without the substantial financial burden of outright purchases. In a rapidly evolving technological landscape, the ability to rent robots is proving to be not only cost-effective but also highly scalable. Organizations can avoid the complications of integrating new technology, ensuring robotic systems work cohesively, regardless of the manufacturer.

H&M on the Move

According to Rebl Industries, H&M has been in the process of deploying these advanced robotic solutions at its Nordic warehouse in Sweden since the previous year. The preliminary results from this initiative have reportedly been promising, with improvements in predictability and efficiency documented. The newly signed contract hints at a broader ambition to expand automated operations within H&M’s logistical infrastructure. Rebl anticipates that more of H&M’s warehouses will soon adopt its technology.

Leadership with Vision

In aligning with its growth ambitions, Rebl recently appointed Nicholas Tengelin as its first external CEO. Tengelin’s previous experience spans various leadership roles in the automotive and logistics sectors, including notable positions with Volvo and the Hedin Mobility Group. His vision fortifies Rebl’s strategy for global expansion.

In Tengelin’s own words, “We are excited to partner with global companies like H&M and IKEA. Our AI-powered robots quickly integrate into warehouse operations, helping to reduce repetitive tasks for employees and increase overall efficiency. This game-changing technology opens up new automation opportunities for industries that previously could not leverage robotics.” Such a statement encapsulates the core of Rebl’s mission: enhancing operational efficiency through artificial intelligence.

Innovative Robotics in Action

Founded in 2018 and based in Gothenburg, Rebl has crafted a proprietary line of robots known as Workmates. These robots are versatile, trained for an array of tasks across various sectors, chiefly focusing on warehousing operations. Common tasks executed by these robots include palletization, unloading pallets, and product picking.

Prior to deployment in client warehouses, Rebl’s robots undergo training in their dedicated automation studio, allowing for tailored modifications to meet specific operational needs. For example, Rebl’s palletization systems employ advanced 3D scanning and data analysis algorithms, enabling the robots to stack incoming goods adeptly. Their operational capacity ranges from handling 350 to 500 parcels hourly, with a weight limit of approximately 77 pounds.

Additionally, the depalletization robots leverage sophisticated vision systems and artificial intelligence to process as many as 1,300 parcels per hour. In contrast, inventory-picking robots are designed for the more delicate task of picking items for customer order fulfillment, accommodating parcels weighing around 11 pounds or less.

The Future of Warehouse Robotics

Rebl’s announcement didn’t specify the exact roles its robots will play in the operations for H&M and Ikea, but the strategic partnerships undoubtedly signal a robust endorsement of the growing integration of warehouse automation technology in e-commerce. Market insights predict the global warehouse robotics market will reach approximately $9.8 billion by 2025, with a significant share expected to stem from e-commerce sectors utilizing these robotic solutions.

As both H&M and Ikea are rooted in Sweden, this initial partnership sets the stage for Rebl’s ambitions beyond domestic borders. The desire to grow its international customer base signifies a strong commitment to become a pivotal player in the expanding global market for warehouse robotics.

Alexander Westerling, co-founder of Rebl, expressed optimism regarding recent contracts with these retail titans and the strategic hiring of Tengelin. He remarked, “This is just the beginning. [Tengelin’s] arrival is a critical step in building a leading robotics hub and expanding our solutions globally. With his leadership, our talented team and strong partnerships, Rebl Industries is well-positioned to make a significant impact on warehouse robotics.”
