In an era where generative AI (genAI) technologies are taking center stage, the security landscape is struggling to keep pace. Cobalt’s recently released State of LLM Security Report 2025 sheds light on critical gaps in enterprise security readiness as organizations increasingly integrate AI into their core operations.

The Growing Security Gap

As companies embed generative AI deeper into their workflows, a notable 36% of security leaders and practitioners confess that the speed of genAI adoption outstrips their teams’ capabilities to secure it effectively. This widening gap underscores a pressing need for enhanced security measures as traditional defenses find themselves overwhelmed.

Calls for Strategic Recalibration

The report highlights a collective sentiment among security professionals: 48% of respondents believe a “strategic pause” is essential. This pause would allow organizations to reassess and recalibrate their defenses, particularly against the rapidly evolving threats posed by generative AI. Nearly three-quarters of survey participants (72%) flagged genAI-related attacks as their primary IT concern. Yet, paradoxically, 33% of those organizations are not implementing regular security assessments, including penetration testing, for their LLM deployments.

Transparency in the AI Supply Chain

The desire for clarity is palpable; half of the respondents expressed a need for more transparency from software providers regarding their methods for detecting and preventing vulnerabilities. This signals a growing trust gap in the AI supply chain, where organizations are becoming increasingly wary of the assurances offered by software suppliers. Transparency is essential not only for building trust but also for fostering a security-conscious culture within organizations.

Diverging Concerns: Leadership vs. Practitioners

A striking divide exists between the concerns of security leaders (C-suite and VP levels) and those of practitioners. For instance, 76% of security leaders express anxiety over long-term threats from adversarial attacks, whereas 68% of practitioners share this concern. Conversely, when considering immediate operational risks, like inaccurate outputs, the figures flip: 45% of practitioners are worried, compared to just 36% of their leadership. This divergence highlights varying perspectives on what constitutes urgent priority and may affect how organizations allocate resources for security measures.

The Spectrum of Risks: Disclosing Sensitive Information

As the report delves deeper, several concerns emerge as paramount among all respondents. The most prevalent fears include the disclosure of sensitive information (46%), model poisoning or theft (42%), and training data leakage (37%). These issues harken back to the critical need to safeguard the integrity of data pipelines that form the backbone of LLMs. As organizations become more reliant on AI for decision-making, failure to protect this data could have catastrophic consequences.

Penetration Testing Findings: A Cause for Alarm

Perhaps one of the more alarming revelations from the report is related to penetration testing outcomes. While 69% of serious findings across all categories of pentests are resolved, this number plummets to just 21% for high-severity vulnerabilities found specifically in LLM pentests. This discrepancy is concerning, especially given that 32% of findings from LLM pentests are classified as serious. The implication is clear; the resolution rate for vulnerabilities in this area is alarmingly low, necessitating immediate action.
