Gary Bradski, a pioneer in the field of computer vision and founder of OpenCV, will serve as the Chief Science Officer. Founded in 2022 by Tyler Niday and Ugur Oezdemirin, Bonsai Robotics focuses on leveraging AI and computer vision to assist nut and citrus growers in challenging environments—places where GPS and cellular connections might not reach. Their technology can be integrated with existing machinery or designed into brand-new vehicles. In contrast, farm-ng, established in 2020 by Ethan Rublee, specializes in lightweight, modular electric robots for various farming tasks, including soil preparation and harvesting for diverse crops from lettuce to grapes.

The merger aims to combine Bonsai’s robust software capabilities with farm-ng’s innovative hardware proficiency, creating versatile agricultural solutions that enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. As Tyler Niday explained, “Our vision has been to make autonomy and AI accessible… This acquisition allows us to develop next-generation machines that optimize farm productivity.”

In discussing their ambitious plans, Niday shared essential components needed to lead the autonomy space for outdoor machines. The partnership envisions employing advanced tech stacks that can adapt to various environmental challenges. “We’ve been on one side of the specialty crop space, and farm-ng has been on the other. We’re the only two companies using similar end-to-end AI models,” Niday noted.

This upswing correlates with a growing acceptance of these technologies by traditional farmers who face labor shortages and rising operational costs.

Bonsai Robotics, having experienced exceptional growth this year, attributes much of its success to its AI-first approach. The company has already deployed over 50 autonomous machines globally, exceeding initial expectations.
