However, the rapid embrace of generative AI isn’t without its pitfalls. As retailers integrate these advanced tools into their daily operations, they unwittingly expand their vulnerability to cyberattacks and potential data breaches. The excitement surrounding this newfound technology masks a growing security risk—where advantages come intertwined with significant liabilities.

The shift in approach within the retail sector is noteworthy. Initially characterized by chaotic early adoption, organizations are moving toward a more regulated, corporate-led strategy. In contrast, the use of company-approved generative AI tools has more than doubled, skyrocketing from 21% to 52%. At the forefront of the retail industry’s AI tools, ChatGPT reigns supreme, with an impressive 81% adoption rate among organizations. Yet, competition is heating up. Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are gaining traction, used by 60% and 56% of retailers respectively. Interestingly, ChatGPT recently experienced its first dip in popularity, a shift likely influenced by the seamless integration of Microsoft 365 Copilot within daily productivity tools that employees rely on.

The Rise of Security Risks

Beneath the surface of generative AI application lies an unsettling reality—a surge in security violations. A staggering 47% of data policy violations in generative AI applications involve the exposure of a company’s own source code. Additionally, 39% pertain to regulated data, such as confidential customer information. This alarming trend indicates that the very capabilities that make these tools advantageous are simultaneously their Achilles’ heel.

Tackling High-Risk Applications

In light of these vulnerabilities, many retailers are adopting a zero-tolerance policy, outright banning apps that pose significant risks. ZeroGPT stands out as the most frequently blocked application, with 47% of organizations disallowing its use due to concerns about its data storage practices and the potential redirection of sensitive information to unauthorized third-party sites.

The Shift Towards Enterprise-Grade Solutions

As security concerns mount, the retail sector is increasingly gravitating towards robust, enterprise-grade generative AI platforms offered by major cloud providers. These solutions enable improved control and customization, allowing companies to host models privately and develop tailored tools. Both OpenAI via Azure and Amazon Bedrock have captured the market, utilized by 16% of retail businesses. However, even these advanced solutions come with caveats; improper configuration might inadvertently expose a company’s critical data assets to breaches.

The report reveals that 63% of organizations are now directly connecting to OpenAI’s API, embedding AI deeply into their automated workflows. Malware Delivery through Trustworthy Channels

Compounding these risks, a pattern of poor cloud security hygiene is becoming apparent. Hackers are increasingly leveraging trusted platforms, such as Microsoft OneDrive, to deliver malicious content. In fact, 11% of retailers report malware attacks originating from this familiar service every month, while GitHub is implicated in 9.7% of such attacks. This trend reinforces the idea that a trusted service isn’t necessarily a safe one.

Personal Apps: A Persistent Pitfall

The ongoing use of personal apps in the workplace exacerbates security vulnerabilities. Notably, social media platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn are commonplace in nearly every retail environment, used by 96% and 94% of organizations, respectively. The danger lies in the fact that when employees upload files to these unapproved services, 76% of the resulting policy violations involve regulated data, highlighting the risks associated with the casual use of personal accounts.

For security leaders in the retail sector, the age of casual experimentation with generative AI is no longer viable. Netskope’s findings are a clarion call for organizations to take decisive action. It is imperative to gain comprehensive visibility of all web traffic, implement robust measures to block high-risk applications, and enforce stringent data protection protocols to regulate the flow of information.
