Ontario Government’s Boost to Key Sectors: A $50 Million Funding Initiative

Companies in four crucial sectors of Ontario’s economy—advanced manufacturing, agri-food, mining, and construction—have received a significant boost through a substantial funding and support program initiated by the Ontario government. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI), has brought $50 million to the forefront, aiming to enhance innovation and competitiveness across these industries.

Overview of OCI’s Critical Industrial Technologies Program

Launched just a year ago, the Critical Industrial Technologies (CIT) program is designed to address the unique challenges and opportunities faced by businesses in Ontario. With funding capabilities of up to $1 million for collaborative projects and $100,000 for individual businesses, the program specifically targets support for research and development, equipment purchases, product testing, talent acquisition, and both upskilling and reskilling of the workforce. So far, more than 100 emerging technologies have been fast-tracked for commercialization, significantly improving Ontario’s manufacturing competitiveness on the global stage.

Insights from Claudia Krywiak

OCI president and CEO Claudia Krywiak will be highlighting the success stories stemming from this program while unveiling additional funding and support opportunities at the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show (CMTS) 2025. Scheduled to take place at the Toronto Congress Centre from September 29 to October 2, Krywiak’s presentation, titled “Critical Technologies, Critical Impact”, will delve into how Ontario is positioning itself for the next industrial transformation.

“Run, don’t walk, to access these opportunities,” Krywiak emphasizes. With the scale of investment and the strategic partnership opportunities on offer, the program has seen overwhelming interest. Currently, OCI is accepting applications from eligible businesses, eager to foster innovation in Ontario.

Focus on Critical Technologies

The CIT program encompasses several critical technology areas essential for modern competitive advantages. These include:

  • 5G and advanced networks
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Machine Learning
  • Robotics
  • Cybersecurity
  • Blockchain
  • Quantum Computing

This broad range of focus allows businesses to explore various cutting-edge technologies tailored to their specific industry needs.

Support Services and Opportunities

At the CMTS 2025 event, Krywiak will outline OCI’s extensive support services. One of the unique aspects of the program is its role as a “matchmaker”, linking talent from post-secondary institutions with companies seeking specialized expertise. Through this framework, companies of all sizes can collaborate in consortiums to tackle sector-wide challenges, paving the way for innovation.

Moreover, OCI provides Technology Access Sites, which enable businesses to trial and showcase new technologies in simulated real-world environments—such as mines and greenhouses—at no cost. This resourceability is invaluable for companies looking to refine their technologies before market introduction.

Real-Life Success Stories

Several companies have already benefited substantially from the CIT program. NordSpace, a Toronto-based aerospace company, has leveraged the program to develop advanced manufacturing processes aimed at optimizing rocket cooling channels. Derrick Chow, director of operations at NordSpace, remarked on the pivotal role OCI played in establishing their new Advanced Manufacturing for Aerospace Lab (AMA Lab): “We’re striving to build sovereign space launch capabilities for Canada, leveraging CIT to enhance our collaboration with Ontario’s industrial base.”

Another notable example is Innovative Automation, based in Barrie, a leader in custom robotic automation solutions. The company is utilizing CIT funding to enhance its capabilities in robotics, computer vision, and AI-driven platforms. President Michael Lalonde highlighted, “This approach strengthens competitiveness, particularly for smaller firms, demonstrating how robotics and AI can transform production across various sectors.”

Enhancing Global Competitiveness

In her upcoming presentation, Krywiak will underscore how support programs like CIT can fortify Ontario companies’ global position amidst today’s fluctuating trade environment. “Critical advanced technologies are the key to success for companies,” she states. It’s clear that adaptability and innovation are vital for Ontario businesses, and OCI is dedicated to providing the necessary support to facilitate this evolution.

Through funding and support initiatives, the OCI is set to play a crucial role in transforming Ontario’s industrial landscape, fostering a culture of innovation that could resonate well beyond provincial borders.
